Film News: An Ogre, A Witch, and a Falcon Wear Prada

By

This might sound like you’re about to read the worst joke of all time, but I assure you there is no impending lame punchline coming. In fact, this is no laughing matter. Some seriously big news dropped in the film world this past week and I am EXCITED! So I thought I would give you a little recap of some of my biggest highlights of all the recent film news. I’m so excited, I don’t even know where to start, so I guess I’ll just jump right into it.

Captain America: Brave New World

The trailer for Captain America: Brave New World dropped over the weekend, and I have to say, it looks like it will be truly epic. While this is the 35th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this will be the 4th instalment in the Captain America film series and will be a continuation of the miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (available to stream on Disney+).

The plot for this story follows Sam Wilson as he tries to find his feet in his new role as Captain America. He finds himself at the centre of an international incident and must work to stop the true brains behind it.

From what I can see in the trailer, it looks like Sam is really struggling to find his identity and his place as Captain America, however, he seems to have an epiphany moment after Thaddeus says to him “You may be Captain America, but you’re not Steve Rogers.” and he seems to realise that he has been going about this all wrong. Then we see an incredible – and I mean INCREDIBLE – shot of this epic Captain America Falcon hybrid and things get real! Every time I see those wings I get actual goosebumps. I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks the MCU was becoming a little stale, but I think that this could be the film that turns it around and brings back some real excitement for the franchise again. I for one am super keen.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to release on February 13, 2025 (Australia) as part of Phase Five of the MCU… so there’s Valentine’s Day for 2025 sorted for all you geeky lovers out there.

Agatha All Along

In more Marvel news, the 11th television series in the MCU is coming to Disney+ this Halloween season with Agatha All Along. This series is a spin-off of WandaVision, and the story takes place after the events of that series. I really enjoyed WandaVision and I was hoping for a season 2, however I am just as thrilled that we are getting this series because I just HAD to know what was going to happen next with Agatha.

To remind you or catch you up, at the end of WandaVision, Agatha Harkness – a powerful witch – was trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey. In Agatha All Along, she remembers who she is and escapes with the help of a goth teen who wishes to face the trials of the legendary Witches’ Road. Without her magical powers, Agatha and the teen form a new coven of witches and go forth to take on the trials.

From what I can see from the trailer, it looks like Agatha All Along is going to have it all; comedy, wit, and the all-important scares for the spooky season. It also looks like it will be quite the story – I want to say the road to redemption for Agatha, but that feels like the wrong word given that she is kind of on the darker side of magic, but it is definitely a journey for her to regain her power, both figuratively and literally.

Agatha All Along is set to premiere this Halloween season on Disney+, with the first 2 episodes available on September 18, 2024. The remaining seven episodes will be released weekly until finishing up on November 6th. This is the 11th television series in the MCU, and will be part of Phase Five.

This looks like it will be the perfect spooky season viewing and I am really excited for it.

Shrek 5

Possibly some of the most exciting news for millennials across the world was the announcement of our generation’s favourite trio to the big screen with Shrek 5! That’s right, not only are we getting a FIFTH Shrek film, but the original cast will be reprising their roles for some all-star fun (see what I did there? haha). Mike Myers will be returning as Shrek, Cameron Diaz will be back as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy will be back as everyone’s favourite ass in the kingdom, Donkey.

That is pretty much all there is to know at the moment – at least, it’s all I know – except for the fact that it is intended to be released in cinemas in July 2026. I can’t wait to find out more about what this story will be about, but after 20+ years, I am going to need to rewatch all the Shrek films so that I can start speculating what the plot of Shrek 5 will be. The only thing at this stage that I can think of is that maybe Shrek and Fiona are living happily ever after in their swap and end up on some wild adventure after Shrek does something stupid while they’re babysitting their grandkids.

The Devil Wear Prada Sequel

Another really exciting announcement was that we are getting a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. The details of the film are yet to be confirmed, but from what I have heard, it looks like Disney is in talks with the original screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, to return and write the sequel.

Given that there is currently no screenplay, we can really only speculate what the story would be about, however, there are rumours that the plot will centre on the infamous devilish boss herself, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), and Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt). There’s no word on whether Anna Hathaway is to return in her role as Andy, but given that she has made comments that left the door open to returning to the role while she was promoting her latest film The Idea of You, there is hope at seeing her return – honestly, it would kind of feel weird to not have her in it.

Also, without any inkling of what the story could be about, I find myself thinking about the period of time that has gone by between the films, and all the changes that have happened. Miranda Priestly is one of the best magazine editors in the business, and as technology has evolved and media has changed over time, I find myself thinking that perhaps the story could centre around her struggle to adapt to the changes in media and how she must navigate her career amid the decline of traditional print media in an age that is now predominately digital.

Anyway, I am very excited to find out more about this film.
