Recently there has been much speculation about the possible return of popular dystopian survival series Alice in Borderland after posters of playing cards appeared at Shibuya Station in Tokyo, Japan, and now it’s official; Netflix has announced that the series will be returning for season 3!
Netflix posted a short teaser clip stating “You may draw another card.” and confirming the season 3 return of Alice in Borderland.
The clip shows the Joker card panning out to reveal the number 3, and is set to some seriously eerie and ominous music. A voice then declares “The game will now commence.” You can watch the teaser clip below.
It’s been confirmed that Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya will return as the shows two main characters, Ryōhei Arisu and Yuzuha Usagi. Also, Shinsuke Sato will be returning to the director’s chair for season 3.
Here’s what we can speculate about season 3:
With 2-years between season 1 and season 2, we can take a guess that we could expect to see season 3 on our screens towards the end of 2024.
As for the content of the storyline for season 3, that is completely open to speculation. Given that the main story of the manga was covered and concluded with seasons 1 and 2, it’s unsure what journey season 3 will take us on. There is a sequel manga titled Alice in Borderland Retry where Arisu finds himself back in the borderlands and faces more games. This manga spans across 2 issues, so there is opportunity to take from that story to create season 3. There is also another spin-off manga series titled Alice on Border Road, which contains more characters and fewer games. This could also potentially be story content for season 3. Or, there is even the possibility that season 3 could be created with entirely new content with an original story.
My personal theory is that at the end of season 2 when they found themselves finally out of the borderlands, they weren’t actually out of it at all. I think that they were being fooled with illusion by the Joker and they were just entering another game.
Only time will tell what we can expect from season 3.
If you’ve got this far and still are unsure what in the heck Alice in Borderland is, here’s a quick summary: It’s a Japanese survival science-fiction series based on a manga series. The story follows Arisu, an obsessed gamer, who finds himself in an abandoned and apocalyptic Tokyo where he must compete in various dangerous games in order to survive.
Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
