It’s Halloween this weekend, which means it’s time to get your spook on! Netflix never disappoints with the spooks and there is a great selection of things to watch, whether you’re having a spookathon or just want to curl up with a bowl of popcorn for something short and scary. Either way, Netflix has you covered this Halloween, and here are my top recommendations of things to watch to get your spook on this Halloween.

The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House is the first instalment in the Haunting anthology series and is a supernatural horror. It tells the story of a family of 5 siblings whose paranormal experiences growing up in their family home, Hill House, continue to haunt them in their adult life. This show alternates between 2 timelines – one in the present where they are adults trying to make sense of their past, and the other is flashbacks to when they were children and showing the events leading up to the night in 1992 that caused the family to flee the mansion.
There’s some pretty spooky moments in this show. If you are looking for a mini-series binge this Halloween, this is a great pick.

The Haunting of Bly Manor
The Haunting of Bly Manor is the second instalment in the Haunting anthology series and falls into the Gothic-romance horror genre. It tells the story on a young woman who is an au pair and is hired by a man to care for his neice and nephew at the famiy country house, Bly Manor, after they fall into his care after the death of their parents. Upon arriving at the Bly estate, the young au pair begins to experience some supernatural encounters and sees apparitions that haunt the property.
There are some seriously spooky moments in this show, most notably with the woman in the lake. If you’re after a series to binge this Halloween, this is a great pick.

Fear Street trilogy
Fear Street is a horror series filled with a variety of horror sub-genres. Broken down into 3 parts, Fear Street centres on a group of teens who fight to break a curse that has been on their town for centuries.
This series has it all; slasher, witchcraft, supernatural, possession, time travel… If you are after a movie series, the Fear Street trilogy is the one for you this Halloween.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a teen horror film that follows a group of teens as they try to stop a haunted book from writing stories and killing people. I went into this thinking it was going to be cheesy scary like Goosebumps since it’s a teen horror, but holy effing heck, it was actually scary AF! It has classic scary campfire stories straight from the book series this film is based on.
I’m not gonna lie, this one is scarier than I thought it was going to be, so if you’re after a good creep fest and jump scares then this is the movie for your Halloween viewing.

The Babadook
The Babadook is an Australian psychological horror film. It centres on a single mother struggling to cope with the sudden violent death of her husband and the fate of her having to raise their only child alone. He son has an intense fear of monsters and has a rather violent reaction in order to overcome his fear, however this makes the mother’s friends become distant and she is forced to struggle alone. When things seemingly couldn’t get worse, a strange book manifests in their house telling them the story of the Babadook monster who lives and hides in all the dark corners of their house – and thus begins a string of nightmare encounters that they must face and somehow forms the rest of the story.
This is one of those movies that sends a fear through you that just sticks with you. While it’s an Australian film, it’s been created in such a way that it doesn’t feel Australian – it feels like this is something that could happen anywhere to anyone, and that is what is incredibly scary about this movie. If you are into arthouse style films, then this is the movie to scare the pants off you this Halloween.

The Gallows
The Gallows is a found footage horror film. It follows a group of teens who are running a production of The Gallows for their school play; a redo 20 years after the same production that ended in real life tragedy. After breaking into the school after hours to vandalise the set, the teens find themselves centre stage to some unexplainable events that are truly terrifying, and they begin to die one by one.
This movie is seriously scary and will have you checking over your shoulder and jumping at your shadow for a while. If you are into found footage films, this is a must watch for your Halloween spook-sesh.

In The Tall Grass
Stephen King is a king when it comes to horror, and In The Tall Grass doesn’t disappoint. It centres on siblings – a brother and sister – who after hearing a young boy calling for help in the fields, enter the tall grass and they quickly discover that there is more to this field than meets the eye. There is some real evil afoot within this grass and they begin to realise that there may not be a way out of the grass at all.
I already knew going into watching this that it was going to be scary because it is a Stephen King story, but living so close to farming country with endless fields of sugarcane, this movie gave me an extra level of fear. If you are into the mystery type of horror films, then this is definitely the movie for you this Halloween.

HUSH
HUSH is a slasher horror film and it is genuinely creepy AF. It centres on a young woman named Maddie, who is a horror author and lives isolated in a house in the woods. One night after her neighbour and friend is murdered on her doorstep, the killer decides to make Maddie his next victim and begins stalking her and threatening her. Oh, I forgot to mention, Maddie is both deaf and unable to speak. She is unable to hear where her attacker is and unable to call out for help, making this story truly terrifying.
This is one of my favourite slasher horrors. It’s a movie that definitely needs to be on your Halloween watch list.

The Invisible Man
The Invisible Man is a remake of the classic film, produced by my favourite spooky production company, Blumhouse Productions. Blumhouse make some seriously scary movies, and The Invisible Man is defintely in that category. It follows the story of Cecillia, a young woman who has escaped her abusive boyfriend, as she tries to make a new life for herself. However, she begins to experience some strange events and comes to realise that her ex had faked his death and is now stalking her and somehow made himself invisible.
This movie is the perfect example of suspense done right. You’ll be on the edge of your seat, hiding under the blanket, and throwing flour around your entire house to make sure you are truly alone. If you only have time for one movie this Halloween and want something seriously creepy, this is the movie.

Creep
CREEP is another masterpiece from Blumhouse Productions. This story follows a videographer who answers a Craigslist ad for a one-day job filming the final messages of a dying man. Throughout the job, things get really strange and the man’s messages begin to get really dark, but the guy sees the job through. Then when it comes time to leave, things take a real turn and he realises that this man really isn’t what he initially seemed to be.
This movie is a bit of a slowburn, but if you are into footage films then you definitely need to watch this one. It’s a movie that is fitting of its title and is seriously creepy. There is also a sequel which I believe is also on Netflix, so you could have yourself the perfect little creepathon this Halloween.

The Conjuring
The Conjuring is the movie that kicked off the franchise telling the stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal investigations and exorcisms. This story follows the Warrens as they help the Perron family with a haunting in their house and the eventual demonic possession of the mother.
This movie has hauntings, demons, exorcisms, and some legit popcorn throwing scares making it the perfect Halloween movie.

The Conjuring 2
The Conjuring 2 is the second installment in The Conjuring series – however, if you are watching in chronological order, I believe it is the third instalment in the Conjuring Universe. This story takes Ed and Lorraine Warren to England to help Hodgson family, who have been experiencing a lot of paranormal activity from a poltergeist and a demonic presence and possession.
In true Conjuring fashion, this is SCARY! It is in this movie that we are introduced to the Nun and the Crooked Man, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I still get sweaty palms and shakey knees when I think about either of them. This movie is perfect for scaring the pants off you this Halloween.

Aftermath
Aftermath follows the story of a young married couple who move into a new house and start a new life in desperation to save their marriage. However, their dream home quickly turns into a nightmare when creepy events start happening and the house’s troubled history is revealed. This movie is based on real events and is legitimately messed up, but it’s the plot twist that will really send shivers down your spine and make every hair on your body stand on end.
It will definitely more of a psychological scare that will have you checking under the bed for months, so if that is what you are after then this is the movie for your Halloween spooks.

Orphan
I find Orphan to be more of a psychologically scary movie. The story centres on a couple who adopt a mysterious 9 year old Russian girl after their third child is stillborn. Her behaviour is quite strange for someone of her age and she seems to be at the centre of a lot of “accidents”. There is a heck of a plot twist at the end that really messes with your head (it did for me anyway and it’s the thing that made this movie really scary for me, especially since it is based on real events).
If you’re up for a bit of a mindf*ck this Halloween, then this is your movie.
Netflix has a great selection of scary things to watch; these are just a few ofm my picks if you aren’t sure of what to watch.
