Sony streamed their PlayStation 5 showcase in the early hours of this morning and holy heck am I excited! The long wait for information on this next-generation console is finally over, and the many questions on all of our lips have been answered… How much is it? When can I get it? Is it backwards compatible? Here’s what we know about the PlayStation 5…
Specs
So, what an we expect from the PlayStation 5? Sony is claiming that “play has no limits” when it comes to this new console, and when you look at the specs you can see why. The PlayStation 5 boasts lightning speeds with a custom CPU, GPU, and SSD with Integrated I/O, and deeper immersion into game play with haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D Audio. Also, when it comes to games, your playing experience is going to be like nothing else before. With HDR technology, games will be more vibrant and lifelike than ever before. You’ll also be able to enjoy smooth and fluid high-frame-rate gameplay at up to 120fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays. And not only will you be able to enjoy these stunning graphics in 4K, the PS5 also has the ability to be indulged in a stunning 8K output. I don’t know about you, but I have never had more incentive to upgrade my gaming setup to be able to enjoy the PS5 gaming experience as it has been designed to be.
Also, this console has two variations; one console is digital only, and the other has a disk drive. In an age where digital libraries are becoming more common, this is a step forward into the future of gaming. However, it was a great move by Sony to also have a disk drive console because there are still many people out there (including myself) who do like to get physical copies of games.
PS4 Compatibility
It has been confirmed that there will be backwards compatibility for PS4 for both games and VR. If you have a digital console, all you will need to do is download your PS4 games onto you new PS5 console, and if you have a disk drive console, simply just put in your disk and play away. I am super happy to hear this news because there are quite a few titles that I am just not ready to give up yet. Also, if it wasn’t PS4 backwards compatible I would have been kind of mad because there have been some great titles amongst recent releases of PS4 games.
There are also some rumours in the air about backwards compatibility with PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles, but this hasn’t been confirmed. Personally, there are a couple of PS3 titles that I would love to play again, but I don’t think Sony will ever go that far back with game compatibility; I think the focus will remain on PS4 compatibility.
PlayStation Plus Subscription Benefits for PS5
Speaking of PS4 games on the PS5, there was some exciting news about the PlayStation Plus subscription… Anyone who purchases a PS5 will receive an exciting benefit with their PlayStation Plus subscription; a library of some of the best games to come to PS4. Titles such as God of War, Detroit: Become Human, Until Dawn, The Last of Us Remastered, Days Gone, and a whole bunch of other great titles will be available to play in what has been named The Plus Collection. This collection will be available exclusively on PS5 and will come at no extra cost to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Thanks Sony!

So How Much Will This Magnificent Machine Set You Back?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the PS5 has been how much it is going to set us back, and as expected this magnificent machine is not cheap. This next-gen console comes in two forms: a digital only console or a disk drive console, and therefore has two different prices. You can pick up a digital console for $599.95, and a disk drive console will set you back $749.95.

PlayStation 5 became available for pre-order in Australia today after the showcase aired this morning, and with a limited stock available due to manufacture delays, you had to be quick to get your hands on one of these consoles; and as expected, there was a high demand and pre-orders were sold out in no time. You can now, however, pre-order your console with the next shipment to be released in 2021.
Release
If you were one of the lucky ones to have snagged a pre-order for launch, then you’ll be able to pick up your console on November 12th… if not, unfortunately you will have to wait for a date for the next shipment sometime in 2021.
I feel incredibly lucky that I was able to get a pre-order on the launch shipment. I haven’t been this excited about something in gaming since the Nintendo Switch. I can not wait until I get my PS5 and start my gaming experience with this next generation of gaming. There are some amazing titles already announced for PS5, with a new Spider-Man game releasing at launch.
If you missed the showcase, or you just want to watch it again to see the epic gaming you will soon be experiencing, take a look at the video below.
Did you manage to get your console pre-ordered, or will you be waiting until 2021? Let me know your thoughts on this console in the comments.
